This commemorative postage stamp was issued in 1962 (AH 1382) by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to mark the first anniversary of the opening of the Islamic University of Madinah. Releasing dedicated postal issues for major educational milestones allowed the Saudi government to highlight its investments in higher learning and showcase its role as a global center for Islamic scholarship across civil mail networks.

The issue was released to celebrate the foundational milestone of the institution, which was established by Royal Decree under King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1961 (AH 1381). Founded on the banks of Wadi al-Aqeeq in Medina, the university was created as a major public academic institution offering specialized programs in Shariah, Quranic studies, and Islamic sciences primarily via full scholarships to international students from around the world to promote global cross-cultural exchange and religious education.
